Future recipients of the newest line of implanted medical devices may share a common enemy with the computer sitting right in front of you: internet hackers., Kevin E. Fu, an assistant computer science professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is working on a solution to this frightening potential problem. He was recently awarded a three-year grant of $449,000 by the National Science Foundation to improve upon the security measures of these life-saving devices.

Dr. Craig Martin, a chemistry professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, was recently awarded a grant to create a larger-than-life interactive display he has dubbed the Molecular Playground. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation awarded Martin a $45,000 special grant to construct the three-dimensional display in the lobby of the Integrated Sciences Building. Martin will be collaborating with Computer Science emeritus professor Allen Hanson and Microbiology emeritus professor Eric Martz to create colorful renditions of familiar molecules on a 6-by-9-foot wall.

Early Sunday morning, the Amherst Fire Department received a call reporting a fire in the living room of apartment 86 of the Townehouse Apartments on Meadow Street of North Amherst. “We had a report I believe about 12:30 of a fire in apartment number 86 that came from the neighbors, not the occupants,” Amherst Fire Department Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren said.

Dr. Jean Kim, the interim vice chancellor for student affairs and campus life at the University of Massachusetts, held an open session on Thursday, Feb. 4 to discuss her future plans for the position with a group of students. The forum was part of a series of open sessions in which UMass students had the opportunity to meet and converse with the candidates for the vice chancellor position.
